British-born Benjamin Latrobe is best known to American history for his design of the United States Capitol, as well as Baltimore's cathedral. After settling first in Virginia, then relocating to Philadelphia, Latrobe spent much of his later life in Washington, D.C., where he was hired as Surveyor of the Public Buildings of the United States. Latrobe worked in Greek revival and Gothic Revival styles, and was highly interested in urban planning, particularly as it was affected by public health. Covering the years 1796 to 1820, The Journal of Latrobe is a ""collection of observations and a record of facts."" The work describes his life and projects in Virginia, Philadelphia, and finally New Orleans, where he died of the yellow fever he caught while working on a waterworks project there. These are the acute observations of an ""architect, naturalist and traveler, "" with commentary on social mores and manners, as well as the development of cities and towns, particularly Washington, D.C.,

Those bright long stitches at the top are something I've never seen before.
This is one of my all-time fave kind of books--a loving and detailed look at samplers from women and girls long gone but living on in their beautiful works. She has traveled from Portland, Maine to the Shenandoah Valley, from the eastern shore of Maryland to San Francisco Bay. Highly recommended.. This tells about 21 modern scientists who are Christians. Then two religious sects are also included: Quakers and Shakers. It has driven her to research and so avidly collect them that, according to the back flap of the dust jacket, she amassed one of the largest collections of samplers in the world! This book includes almost 80 pieces and is divided into 1/3 18th century and 2/3 19th century. Together, these many tales create a compelling and vivid portrait of the lives of young women in colonial and post-Revolutionary America.. Perfect book for the serious or not so serious Sampler Lover and collector. Yo
