- Winner of the 2007 American Authors Association Golden Quill Award
- Winner of the 2007 Military Writers Society of America Founder's AwardIn Iraq, the front lines are everywhere - and everywhere in Iraq, no matter what their job descriptions say, women in the U.S. military are fighting--more than 155,000 of them. A critical and commercial success in hardcover, Band of Sisters presents a dozen groundbreaking and often heart-wrenching stories of American women in combat in Iraq, such as the U.S.'s first female pilot to be shot down and survive, the military's first black female pilot in combat, a young turret gunner defending convoys, and a nurse struggling to save lives, including her own.
Kirsten Holmstedt is a graduate of Drake University’s School of Journalism and the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s master of fine arts program. She has been writer-in-residence at the College of William and Mary and currently teaches writing at a community college. Her previous books are the highly acclaimed Band of Sisters and The Girls Come Marching Home. She has appeared on PBS, the BBC, and C-SPAN, among other TV and radio programs. As an expert on and advocate for female service members, she has testified before Congress and spoken to countless businesses and colleges around the country. She lives in Connecticut.
It wasn't an attempt to include every model and make ever made, but fairly complete nevertheless. Few figures/images in this black-and-white publication limit its usefulness. It is childlike and at the same time pretty sophisticated in design. The book is filled with stories of fighting women in Iraq. The diversity presented was eye-opening. The example are simple, and everyone can understand the TK code. All mothers do experience marginalization, a relegation to the sidelines of our growing children's lives with the concomitant shame undermining our pride when loving involvement persists. I hail Ginn Hale as an author extraordinaire and the Lord of White Hell books both get my seal of writing excellence.
